Cornflakes. Suuure.

Wednesday, July 31st, 2002

Okay, so I know I’m *way* behind the times on this one, but I’m listening to some Tori Amos, and all I can say is, “WTF?” Was this woman dropped on the head a few times as a child? She’s obviously very musically talented, but her lyrics have this tendency to cross the [...]

Get ‘Bent!

Wednesday, July 31st, 2002

Yesterday’s stats from the bike computer…
Time spent rolling: 1 hour, 31 minutes
Average speed: 12.4 mph
Max speed: 37.4 mph
Total distance: 19.2 miles (!)
Pretty far cry from six months ago, when it took half an hour to get to work (2.5 miles) and I was wheezing for 20 minutes after I sat down.

DMCA and Other Madness

Tuesday, July 30th, 2002

About time somebody worked up the chutzpah to challenge the DMCA in public. Dmitry Sklyarov’s arrest was a real eye-opener for a lot of geeks last summer, but I for one have become rather complacent since he was release — still pissed off at the DMCA, but less active about it.
Having people publicly break [...]

Here’s a highly entertaining (and mildly naughty) cartoon, courtesy of Ariel.

Moore Is Less

Monday, July 29th, 2002

So strictly speaking, this isn’t an application of Moore’s Law. But in an article about how hard drives that keep getting larger and better are driving new kinds of digital devices, I found this interesting trivia:
The cost of hard drive storage has dropped from $10,000 per megabyte when IBM invented the hard drive in [...]

Whee

Monday, July 29th, 2002

Insomnia sucks. One of these days I will learn not to take naps after 4pm or so.

What, No “Iron Man?”

Sunday, July 28th, 2002

You cannot make up this kind of thing:
An Estonian record company has released an album of Black Sabbath songs played by a quintet specializing in music from the Middle Ages and singing in the main literary language of that era, Latin.
“If you take away the massive wall of sound from many Sabbath songs, what you [...]

Isn’t It… A Bummer?

Saturday, July 27th, 2002

Wow. Irony plug-ins for your Web browser. How is it possible that I did not know about this before? Check out the screenshot — it seems someone else shares my opinion of Alanis Morrissette’s songwriter.

Geekboy

Saturday, July 27th, 2002

I’ve made a simple change to the stylesheet for this page — changed the color of quoted text from orange to blue. Not only does this reduce the colors in the palette from four to three (not including the black background), it also, I think, makes the blockquotes easier to read. What do [...]

Geekboy

Saturday, July 27th, 2002

Okay, you know you’re a geek when your quicklaunch toolbar has icons for no less than FIVE different text editors. (Which five? Notepad, Wordpad, PFE, ConTEXT and XEmacs.)
And, come to think of it, four different Web browsers. (Netscape 4, Netscape 6, IE and Opera.)

I Said “MILK!”

Saturday, July 27th, 2002

Cool concept: signing to your pre-verbal infant. Makes no small amount of sense; surely the thoughts have to be there before they can start figuring out how to use their complicated vocal equipment to make them come out.
And hey, anything that makes kids smarter can’t be bad either, right? I’m quite sure [...]

The picture reads, “Can you tell what time it is?” Sadly, I can. Open the comments if you’re curious.

Home of the Stupid

Friday, July 26th, 2002

This is beyond appalling. Tom Tomorrow posts the following:
They thought they were making routine purchases — the innocent, everyday pickups of charcoal and hummus, bleach and sandwich bags, that keep the modern household running. Regulars at a national grocery chain, these thousands and thousands of shoppers used the store’s preferred-customer cards, in the process [...]

That’ll Show ‘Em

Friday, July 26th, 2002

So I’m ordering a bottle of my favorite shampoo over the Web (Lavender Mint body shampoo, which I can get away with because I have no hair to speak of), and the order form includes the usual “How did you hear about us?” field. And it’s required. So I fill it out “My [...]

Hug Your Sysadmin

Friday, July 26th, 2002

Apparently the last Friday of every July is System Administrator Appreciation Day. From their photo gallery comes this little gem, which demonstrates the principle that raw sewage and server rooms are generally best left unmixed.

I Love This Town

Friday, July 26th, 2002

This year’s BikeSummer festival is being held in Portland. Take a look at the calendar — there’s something going on every day in August, and often multiple somethings. (There’s even a “Knitting for Cyclists” class. Go figure!) There’s even a locally-brewed beer: Full Sail Brewing has a “BikeSummerFest Brew” on [...]

Those Wacky Humans

Thursday, July 25th, 2002

Here’s a collection of links to unusual human-powered vehicles (HPVs) for hours of silliness and, if you’re strange enough, inspiration.
Personally, I like the idea of a dual-drive tandem (where each rider has an independent chain and gear system). One of the major drawbacks to riding most tandems (at least in my mind) is that [...]

Gnarly And Weird

Thursday, July 25th, 2002

So I was going to post a little story about this song by [the now late] Dave Carter and [surviving partner] Tracy Grammer, so I went in search of the lyrics, and read them while I was listening to the song. Wow.
Anybody who can write and sing a two-part harmony like that doesn’t deserve [...]

Geekboy

Wednesday, July 24th, 2002

Wow. Thank goodness for Lynx!
After getting rather frustrated with Mandrake Linux 8.2, I downloaded and installed Red Hat Linux 7.3. Red Hat, for some reason, hasn’t figured out how to send the proper signals to my monitor to get it to work at 1024×768 resolution, so when I started the GUI, [...]

Cause and Effect II

Wednesday, July 24th, 2002

He’s done it again. Salon’s “wire stories” featured the following two headlines back-to-back (I’ve reversed the order to show the chronology):
Bush backs Social Security privatization
Bush economic approval rating down
