Baaack!

Saturday, November 30th, 2002

Just got back from Seattle. We spent the holiday with a friend and her family, and had a great time. Harry Potter II was better than I expected it to be — oh, I had some beefs, but overall it was fun, and Dobby was (a) not Jar-Jar, and (b) better on screen [...]

Giles… You’ve Changed!

Tuesday, November 26th, 2002

Our friend Allyson sends this link to a page with lots of pictures of Anthony Stewart Head as Frank N. Furter. (This is probably not nearly as funny to people who aren’t Buffy fans. And, um, Rocky fans.)

Mister Language Person

Tuesday, November 26th, 2002

Why, when I am reading articles, do I usually see “dot-com” spelled as “dot.com”? If you read it aloud, the absurdity is immediately apparent: you say “mumble dot com” instead of “mumble dot dot com”… so what’s up with that?

Drip Dry

Tuesday, November 26th, 2002

My sweetie just called me from the road to tell me the name of a coffee shop she saw: Brewed Awakenings.
Doh!

Geekboy

Monday, November 25th, 2002

Ladies and gentlemen… CityDesk! (For those of you with Flash and sound, check out the full Flash demo.)
I’ve known about this software for a while (it’s website content management for the desktop, designed to be usable by both end-users and geeks), but I’ve never had a reason to try it.
This thing is the coolest [...]

Ugh

Monday, November 25th, 2002

So as I may have mentioned, I was involved in a bike/car collision last Wednesday. Saturday, the mail brought a nice letter from the insurance company, informing me that they had decided I was responsible for the loss and needed to contact them about paying an unspecified amount in damages. Whee! (This [...]

Spamity Spam

The subject lines of three consecutive spam messages in my inbox, in chronological order:
Isn’t that a celebrity?
Find out!
You won’t believe it

How Much Is Your Head Worth?

Friday, November 22nd, 2002

In my case, my head is worth infinitely more than the $40 I paid for my bike helmet, which makes it one of the best investments around. (Plus, it keeps the sun off my head on hot days!) Here’s a shot of the damage it took, which I’ve highlighted to make up for [...]

Birthday

Thursday, November 21st, 2002

Which one of you should I thank for the T-Shirt? Justin?
Thanks!
(By the way, ThinkGeek has some cool new toys, the coolest of which by far is this remote-controlled flying saucer. Wow!)

Man Purse

Thursday, November 21st, 2002

Amusing Jon Carroll column about carrying a purse (which I, on occasion, do).

Toast

Wednesday, November 20th, 2002

So I was on my way to give a presentation this evening, and within a mile of my destination, I got hit by a car. I was going about 20mph in the bike lane, and somebody in a newish Jeep Cherokee made a right turn in front of me. I thought he was [...]

The Sound Of One Wheel Gathering Dust

Monday, November 18th, 2002

It appears that you can now buy the Segway scooter from Amazon — for a mere $5k. Color me nonplussed: something tells me they won’t exactly be flying off the shelves at those prices. If they can get it down under $1k, I might think about it.

Yay For Forgetful People

Monday, November 18th, 2002

Saw a car in a parking lot today with its lights on. Fortunately, the driver had also neglected to lock the door, so I was able to turn them off. When that happens, it’s usually with cheap older cars — exactly the people who would be the worst off having to call a [...]

When Everything You Know Is Wrong

Sunday, November 17th, 2002

So I’m not clever enough to figure out how to save the damn thing to my desktop (damn you, Apple, and your collusion with an industry that wants to destroy you!), but while it’s there, I recommend watching the trailer to “Comedian.” I’m not a Seinfeld fan, but this is one of the funniest [...]

Get ‘Bent!

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

So when one goes to something called the “Rudolf Bicycle Film Festival,” one generally assumes that all of the movies in said festival will actually be about bikes. That they will not suck is, while not guaranteed, also to be hoped.
Oh, well. One or two of the films were actually fun and worthwhile, [...]

Wooink!

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

I dreamed a commercial last night. It featured a small household pet which was a cross between a small dog and a potbellied pig (a pigdog, if you will, not to be confused with a dogcow). Apparently these critters had (in my dream) an unfortunate tendency to get (ahem) up close and personal [...]

Spamity Spam

Saturday, November 16th, 2002

This spammer at least came up with a relatively interesting name: “Destiny Dalrymple.”

Yay, Tech!

Friday, November 15th, 2002

So I’m on unemployment now. Last week was my “waiting week,” where I have to meet eligibility requirements but I don’t actually receive any benefits. As part of the requirements, I have to report weekly. Last time I was unemployed (oh, about 4 years ago in California), this reporting was done on [...]
