Rooster Boy

Saturday, June 28th, 2003

Just got back from seeing Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. I mostly had fun, my sweetie had a great time, there was considerable kicking of ass, and best of all, we both now have T-shirts that say “Penguins are so sensitive to my needs.” Life is good.

Random Weirdness

Friday, June 27th, 2003

Some miscellaneous items:

Icon War - an amusing Flash animation. (Thanks, Justin!)
An article about the national do-not-call registry, and how it’s been swamped since it opened recently.
An article about George II being labeled a “professional fascist” on a New Zealand TV show. (Again, thanks, Justin!)

Small Planet

Tuesday, June 24th, 2003

Oh, by the way, Justin — the Civic hybrid gets better gas mileage than you were saying: EPA ratings are 46 city/51 highway for the stick shift and 48/47 for the CVT (automatic). Not as impressive as the Insight’s 65ish mpg, but quite good considering it’s a 4-door sedan (and the gas-only version [...]

Diz Knee Land

Monday, June 23rd, 2003

So we got back yesterday from a few days spent in Anaheim. We flew down Thursday, went to Disneyland with Justin, his sweetie Monica, and our non-Web-presence-having friend Allyson on Friday (and of course, Much Fun was had by all), then had a reception-type celebration (no repeat ceremony, but we did say a few [...]

So Apple released Safari 1.0, and my first impression is: it looks exactly the same. I’m quite pleased with the browser overall, but I’m surprised that nobody other than Opera seems to be able to produce a Web browser with *usable* tabbed browsing. Opera (my primary browser on Windows) lets me drag tabs [...]

Gar Gar Gar

Wednesday, June 18th, 2003

I am displeased. We spent $45 on a cheap plastic keyboard tray which doesn’t fit the desk, and in fact is now coming loose from said desk. And as for the desk, I hate having my computer on the floor underneath the desk, because every time I have to plug something in, I’m [...]

Canananananada

Wednesday, June 18th, 2003

I haven’t posted anything about this latest item yet, but I’ve been following recent developments in Canada. There were some court challenges to Canadian marriage law, which currently defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. Two or three rulings (in BC and some other provinces) basically said that was unconstitutional. [...]

Mister Language Person

Wednesday, June 18th, 2003

I was rather puzzled to see the name of Oregon’s Republican Senator, along with that of Nike, on an event announcement on a local nonprofit resources email list. The event was for something called “the FUN family,” which I hadn’t heard of, so I went to their web site. They may have changed [...]

Therapy

Wednesday, June 18th, 2003

So apparently Dooce is pregnant, or rather the woman who writes the weblog at dooce.com is pregnant, and her latest post has to do with what to name her baby. It’s pretty funny on its own, but it gets a little bit funnier if you happen to know my sweetie’s first name.
I wonder what [...]

You Have Forgotten Something

Tuesday, June 17th, 2003

As I may have mentioned before, my memory is not so good. Case in point: I woke up this morning and realized I’d forgotten to take the final exam for one of my online classes. Wups. Fortunately, the teacher took pity on me and is letting me make it up.

Belly Gonna Getcha

Friday, June 13th, 2003

For Justin: a link to a Quicktime version of a Reebok ad. I know he’ll like it because not only is it a memorable ad, but it manages the (fortunately difficult) task of evoking both The Prisoner *and* GWAR.
(link via Boing Boing, which seems oddly appropriate.)

Patently Stupid

Wednesday, June 11th, 2003

Okay, it’s about trademarks, not patents, but the basic idea is the same: Samsung designs a 10GB MP3 player which resembles the iPod. Apple threatens to sue (see “too close for comfort” at bottom of page) because it resembles the iPod a little too closely. Samsung caves, and delays the launch of [...]

Spamity Spam

Wednesday, June 11th, 2003

Just deleted a piece of spam advertising a keychain Breathalyzer. I’m thinking that, if you have to carry around a Breathalyzer on your keychain to tell you when it’s legal for you to drive, you may perhaps have a few other issues to address.

Public Domainy Goodness

Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

So I normally don’t bother with online petitions, and I have few illusions that this one will accomplish much in and of itself — but. The public domain is disappearing quickly, and Lawrence Lessig & co. have a really good idea for mitigating some of the worst damage caused by the current excesses of [...]

Fanboy

Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

So I’d sort of forgotten about the MTV Movie Awards (what with the whole not-having-cable-TV thing), but then a friend of mine linked to this video clip from the most recent ceremony, showing the category of “Best Digital Performance.” (I’ll spoil this much in advance: Gollum won. Not that this should surprise anyone; [...]

Fanboy

Tuesday, June 10th, 2003

For those keeping track, Buffy season 4 came out today. And yet, we’re going to display admirable restraint, and possibly not try to rent it until this weekend. (We have dinner guests tomorrow, you see.) Or maybe Thursday. Or, hell, our guests will understand, and they’ll probably like the show, too… [...]

Domestic Bliss

Monday, June 9th, 2003

Okay, one more before I reapply Nose A to Grindstone B. This Salon article uses Hillary Clinton’s new book as a springboard to ask some interesting questions about monogamy (like, “Do the Clintons have an open marriage?”). It contained this intriguing assertion:
Ask any long-term couple the top five reasons why they’re still together [...]

Memo To Mister Lewis

Monday, June 9th, 2003

While at lunch today, I was reading a local zine called Nervy Girl (NOTE: probably not work-safe, at least not as I write this). One of the ads almost made me laugh out loud, especially considering that I’m currently reading “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe” to my sweetie at bedtime. [...]

Libr-ation

Thursday, June 5th, 2003

I actually set foot in, and checked something out from, a public library today. If I remember correctly, that’s something I haven’t done in about ten years, maybe a little more. From when I was about 6 up to the age of about 16 or 17, I practically *lived* in the school and [...]
