WTF, Over?

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Dude, this is some seriously fucked-up YouTube shit right here: a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” by Sad Kermit. Features a puppet of Kermit shooting smack, popping pills, playing acoustic guitar, vomiting, and… uh… other stuff, too. I actually really like the Johnny Cash cover of the song, but this was [...]

Right Place, Right Time?

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

It looks like Portland is becoming a hotspot for extraordinarily talented Ruby coders. (A Rails job was advertised yesterday — for a place four blocks from my house.) This bodes well.

E Text Editor: A Mini-Review

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

I downloaded the beta of E yesterday evening and did a little bit of editing with it. I must say, for still being in beta, it’s pretty damned impressive — easily one of the most functional GUI editors for the Windows platform I’ve seen in a long time. And it was nice to [...]

Feisty Fawn

Monday, March 26th, 2007

The latest (as of this writing) beta version of Ubuntu Linux is called “Feisty Fawn.”

Ubergeek

The fruits of today’s labors: a simple web service that calculates the driving distance between two addresses. I wrote it using Camping, and it makes a $299 copy of Microsoft MapPoint able to be run on, and accessed from, a Mac.

I am, indeed, pleased with my bad self.

Podcast Recommendations?

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

A quick question for my *vast* readership: are there any podcasts I just have to hear? I’ve started listening to the Brain Food podcast, which had an interesting bit on caffeine, but which is otherwise 90% stuff I already knew. I adore “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me,” and of course the Rails [...]

Fun With Calculus

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

An ad from Portland craigslist that found its way onto my college’s student-jobs email list reads:
Hello everyone im looking for a html wizard someone who is familar with blogs and youtube! I started a webseries, Kuestion A Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8SUzErUX9I) and it’s doing great, but I need a website with a blog feel. Think you can [...]

Like, Inspirational, Man!

Closing some tabs here.

The Top 10 Things They Never Taught Me In Design School — applies rather well to software, too.
Hindsights, a good commencement speech by Guy Kawasaki.

Nope, Not Obvious In Any Way…

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Last year, the US Patent Office issued a software patent for… a linked list. Of course, this one has *multiple* pointers per list element, so you can maintain multiple orderings. Which, of course, nobody in the previous fifty years would ever have thought of, no sir.

Anybody else notice that the theme music from the Savage Love podcast is the same as the music used in the original Wallace and Gromit short?

Moment Of Clarity

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Feeling considerably better today, and have been engaged in much mischief. I just had a moment of “whoa” looking at my screen and decided to share this screenshot:

I’m writing a web server which will run on Windows, which itself is running inside Parallels Desktop on a Mac Mini, which is in Sacramento, so I [...]

Never Seen *That* Before

Friday, March 16th, 2007

While playing around with a volume control widget on my [Windows XP] PC, I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Down-arrow, and was extremely surprised when the display on the smaller of my two monitors flipped upside down. Further experimentation reveals that I can rotate it in any of the four cardinal directions using this, um, “feature.” (Screenshots [...]

Sick. Again.
Ye gods, I hate being sick. It’s a good thing it only happens once every two or three years.

Say, This Sounds Familiar

Friday, March 9th, 2007

Listening to music while I code is always tricky. On the one hand, there’s a lot of music out there that just annoys me. On the other hand, my own collection isn’t very big, so I tend to get bored with it. So I go back and forth between listening to my [...]

Cave Boy

So. Over. This.

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

On Sunday, my coughing was beginning to lessen in severity, and I had a bit more energy, and I looked forward to feeling more or less back to normal on Monday. See two posts back for how well that went. Yesterday was indeed better; I felt well enough to at least sit up [...]

Camping In Bed

Monday, March 5th, 2007

I’ve spent about an hour today outside of bed. When I haven’t been semi-unconscious, I’ve been poking around at Ruby stuff just to see what’s out there. For the fun of it, I played around a bit with Camping, _why’s teeny-tiny MVC microframework for Ruby.
So far, at least, I’m not a huge fan. [...]

Plague

Monday, March 5th, 2007

I have the plague. I was pretty sure I’d be up and about today, so I was quite surprised when, after eating breakfast at around 8am, I found myself waking up in bed again at 10:15. So I dragged my laptop into the bedroom and have been in bed all day.
Perhaps because the [...]
