It’s Alive! It’s ALIIIIIVE!

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

One year of mostly doing other things (like homework) later, I’ve dragged the new version of Outcomes Tracker to a point where I feel comfortable mentioning it in public.
If this doesn’t mean anything to you, don’t worry about it. Just know that I’m glad to have it up there and excited that a few [...]

NetBeans 6: Neat, But Still Too Sluggish For Prime Time

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Someone from Sun was showing off NetBeans 6 last week at RailsConf. Learning that they’d fixed one of the major problems I had with it last time (it didn’t deal with embedded grammars, so you could have HTML highlighting but not Ruby highlighting in your .rhtml files) renewed my interest, but it’s still too [...]

Dreams Of Flying, a series of whimsical (but still cool — not in an Anne Geddes kind of way) pictures of kids enacting various fantasy scenes.

Mishmash

A few random tabs I have open at the moment:

Pac-Man’s Skull
King Kung Fu
Treetop, a Ruby library with an interesting (and very Rubyesque) approach to parsing
acts_as_paranoid, one of the more amusingly-named Rails plugins

Best Keynote Excerpt Ever

“By the way, this is a sort of Platonic ideal of a penis; it’s not actually my penis.”

Sweet Hacks

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I’ve seen two really cool-looking Rails tools this afternoon: Heckle [rubyforge link] and FixtureScenarios. Nice! FixtureScenarios in particular is nice and DRY. (I might even go so far as to say it’s OAOO.)

Inconceivable!

Robert Martin, the speaker I’m currently listening to, also sounds like Vizzini.

Another 15 Nanominutes Used Up

Friday, May 18th, 2007

I skipped out of the auditorium just at the end of the keynote. (1500 developers / 12 comfy chairs = “ow my back.”) As it happens, three of the four people sitting in this little pod are using Macs. Some guy just walked by with his cameraphone and said, “Do you mind [...]

Ha-Ha, You Fool!

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

I’ve been sitting here listening to David Black talk for twenty minutes, and I just realized who he sounds like: the guy who played Vizzini in the Princess Bride.

My Noodly Appendages, Part Deux

Note to anyone wishing to improve their wrist and hand strength: buy one of these. It’ll tire you out in minutes. Bonus disco LED effect if you use it in a dark room.

Yesterday’s Odd Family Moment: sitting at a family party in Southern California, listening to someone going on about how fake everything is…
…in Florida.

Straight From The Horse’s…

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Reading the paper at lunch today, I ran across this little gem from Dick Cheney, addressing US troops in Iraq:
“We are here, above all, because the terrorists who have declared war on America and other free nations have made Iraq the central front in that war.”
I don’t know about you, but I think that’s a [...]

Hashcash: A Clever Counterspam Measure

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Hadn’t heard of this before, but I think it’s quite creative and would have a good chance of working if more people demanded it: hashcash. Basically, it asks the sender of a message to spend a second or two doing computation before sending, or the message gets rejected. Impacts on most legitimate [...]

Not My Finest Moment

I just wrote the following line of code:
operator = ‘==’ if ‘=’ == (operator)
Could be clearer.

Donnie Darko

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

I just finished watching Donnie Darko, on account of I kept hearing about it in various places, most recently realsupergirl’s favorite movies meme.
On the whole, I’m not a fan. I did like the soundtrack, and the basic plot — a fairly-standard temporal loop — was decent enough. But, the direction… oh, the direction. [...]

Minimum Wage

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Via reddit, a chart showing federal minimum wage levels, adjusted to 2006 dollars. Also includes further charts comparing these values with the federal poverty level, assuming (50 weeks/year * 40 hrs/week)= 2000 hrs/year. 1968 saw the highest purchasing power for minimum-wage workers, and even if one member of a family worked full-time in [...]

ZOMG Fanboy!!!11!

Friday, May 4th, 2007

A film showing this weekend at the NW Film Center:
“Nothing could possibly prepare you for this, the first-ever gay-samurai-road-movie-musical! Set sometime in between the Edo period and, like, never, it tells the dizzying story of two gay samurai who are just looking for a slice of peace in this crazy, mixed-up world. Setting out for [...]
