Cheers!

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Currently in Keswick in the northern Lake District of England. It is *so freakin’ lovely* here. (The fact that it didn’t rain on us for two days, even though rain was forecast, helps a lot. So does not being in York, which is having severe flooding problems.) We did a monster [...]

Au Revoir, Internets!

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Bags are packed. PC is unplugged. Laptop is about to go away. New headphones have been purchased (passive noise canceling only, but still better than the stock pair, which have been patched up with duct tape). iPod is crammed full of not-too-geeky podcasts and 37 of my top-rated songs. I [...]

Not The Best Sign

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

I just got home from my first-ever professional massage. Wanting to err on the side of conservatism, I opted not to go with the “deep tissue” version. Apparently I could’ve used it. Walking out of the spa afterward, I had two realizations: first, that I couldn’t remember feeling so relaxed since [...]

Big Day

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Bathroom is finished, with one or two trivial exceptions. (Pics as soon as I can find the cable for my camera.)
At the CS department’s graduation ceremony, I received an award for having one of the four highest GPAs in my class. (I knew 3.79 was decent — I didn’t realize it was *that* [...]

Why I’m Excited To Go Work On A Team

Friday, June 15th, 2007

I couldn’t have put it better myself:

Shiny!

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Magnetosphere: an iTunes visualizer that will knock your socks off even if you don’t partake beforehand. Not quite as tranquil as the Flurry screensaver (Windows denizens, go here to see what you’re missing), but possibly prettier. And certainly better at detecting beats than the built-in visualizer.

My Own Personal Theme Song

Friday, June 15th, 2007

Sung to the tune of the old Spider-Man jingle. [With apologies to Depeche Mode for the title.]
Obvious Man, Obvious Man
Doesn’t see things that everyone can
Misses clues, any size
[His] gaping mouth gathers flies
Look out — here comes the Obvious Man!

Yay!

Today, for the first time since Monday, I get to take a shower in my own home!

So Much For That…

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Downloaded the beta of Safari 3, tried it out for a few minutes. At least at the moment, with a slight headache and some eyestrain, I prefer the fonts Safari is using. (Curious about the difference?) However, Safari isn’t respecting my keyboard commands (I’ve hit Ctrl+Delete half a dozen times in writing [...]

As is my usual M.O. when fawnapril is out of town, I rented a bunch of action movies. I was quite pleasantly surprised to make my reacquaintance with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I’d forgotten: it is one of the few perfect films I have ever seen.

Tasty, And So Good For You!

Monday, June 11th, 2007

While fawnapril is in France (she should be in Rennes about now), I am also in an exotic locale: my back yard. I’m listening to the sounds of squirrels, birds, sirens, and demolition. That last is coming from my bathroom, which is a bit of a disaster. We’ve known for a [...]

Saturday Morning Media

Saturday, June 9th, 2007

I was just going to post pictures from the rappelling class (they’re here, btw), but then I saw this fantastic video on reddit — apparently shot in a single take in some dot-com Web 2.0 company’s lunchroom.
Why do I think it’s a Web 2.0 company? Because not a single person in the video appears [...]

Powell’s Has My Number

It’s like they totally read my mind.

A New Chapter

Friday, June 8th, 2007

I started programming nine years ago. It began innocently enough: my dad asked for some help putting together some data in an Access database. Shortly thereafter, I realized I was going to need to write VBA code in order to do anything interesting, so I enrolled in a VB class and attended [...]

Whee!

Note to self: when rappelling, one rope is way more fun than two.
Photos soon for the rest of you.

Quantum Theory Meets Lolcats

IM IN UR QUANTUM BOX… MAYBE. Effin’ brilliant.

Rise And Shine

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

I’m up before the sun. On purpose.
The idea is to get myself onto East Coast time, so that when I get to London, I’ll only have a 5-hour difference to deal with instead of an 8-hour one. More importantly, by setting a firm time to drag my ass out of bed in the [...]

A Coding Rant

Saturday, June 2nd, 2007

I see now why so many Java programmers are excited about Rails — it’s because they’re stuck working in a Stalinist Fisher-Price language that requires reams of bondage code to accomplish not much of anything at all. I just did a search for ‘lightweight java web framework’ and came across a few references to [...]
